With four state parks within 30 minutes of Helen plus the Chattahoochee National Forest, there are miles to stretch into where few others roam. Here are some shorter hikes that are usually not as crowded.Bottoms Loop Trail at Unicoi State Park - There is a wonderful 2.5 mile hike at Unicoi State Park that wraps around the lake. If you want the hike less traveled, try the Bottoms Loop Trail. It is a 2 mile long adventure through woodlands and streams. Get more information at the Visitor Center located at the lodge and be sure to ask for a trail map - some turns may not be marked clearly. All state parks charge $5 for a day pass.Laurel Ridge Trail at Smithgall Woods - This 1.6 mile loop trail is beside the Visitor Center near the entrance to the park. There is a bit of a climb, but the view of Mt. Yonah is your treat for the effort! The park is gated so be sure to plan your hike during hours of operation. All state parks charge $5 for a day pass. Hemlock Falls Trail at Moccasin Creek State Park - Another short hike (1.5 miles round-trip) that gives a big reward -- this trail follows along Moccasin Creek to Hemlock Falls. No hills on this one but give special attention to footing on rocks. All state parks charge $5 for a day pass. Go to Moccasin Creek State Park for more information on the park. Check out this scenic drive:Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway - For a day-trip, consider this 3 hour drive through drop dead gorgeous mountain beauty. There are lots of places to stop for hikes, picnics, and definitely photo ops along the way. But if you want to really get away, here are a few of our more secluded cabins to consider.Chattahoochee Shoals - For an amazing, relaxing view of the Chattahoochee River, spend a few days or a few weeks at Chattahoochee Shoals. The only neighbors you will find here are the 4-legged variety! Great for families with a master bedroom on the main floor and a loft with two queen beds. About 20 minutes from Helen.

Chimney Mountain Chalet - If you like leisurely baths and dogs, this oneâs for you! Put Fido in the fenced backyard, turn on the jets and relax in the garden tub. Minutes from Unicoi State Park and about 15 to Helen.Bogg's Mountain Lodge - One way to know you are in a good place is when you are surrounded by Rhododendrons and Mountain Laurel. Once off the main road, enjoy driving along a stream surrounded by these mountain evergreens. This is a place to soothe your soul among the evergreens, sitting on the deck or staring up at a starry night sky from the hot tub. Bogg's Mountain Lodge is 10 minutes from Clayton, GA.Knotty Pine - Relaxing in the hot tub, looking out at the woods - if that sounds good to you, check out Knotty Pine.
