Fire Up the Grill with GMR

While staying with Georgia Mountain Rentals (GMR), most of our guests plan at least one dinner on the cabin grill. The first image that always comes to mind when you mention firing up the grill is a thick juicy steak with new potatoes roasting on the back side. Jazz up your meal with a variety of flavors and delicious vegetables! Visit one of the local produce stands or Saturday morning Farmer's Markets for a change in the menu.To start, we have small grocers and produce stands in and not far from Helen. You will find Betty's Country Store in Helen, Fritches Produce on Highway 17 near Amy's Creek and in Clarkesville there's Holland's Produce. The Tomato House is another fun food shopping experience. The Tomato House is located on Highway 115 between Cleveland and Dahlonega. Saturday morning Farmer's Markets can be found in Cleveland, Clarkesville and Dahlonega for locally grown, often organic, vegetables. Here are some of my favorite easy ideas for Veggies on the Grill...Corn on the Cobcorn2Pull the corn husk down to the end of the cob, making sure to leave attached. Remove silks and wash. Cover with butter, and add your favorite herb. Pull the husk back up and around the corn. You can tie the ends with water soaked kitchen twine or leave loose and open. My favorite herb for sweet Silver Queen Corn is fresh thyme. Cilantro, basil and tarragon are tasty, too!Grilled OkraokraPurchase medium to larger size okra. Stay away from gigantic okra, as it can be tough and not very flavorful. Carefully cut the stem at the top, but do not go below the cap line, as this will cause the pod to release its sap and make for a difficult washing and seasoning. Orangic purple okra has less of this sugary, protein filled goo! Wash the okra and dry well. Drizzle with olive oil and toss with salt and pepper. Place on the grill, turning often. The color will change to a vivid green and evidence of grilling.Grilled Zucchinigrilled-zucchini-with-garlic-and-lemon-butterMy company always opts for grilled zucchini when I fire up the grill. For these delicious squash, I go for the small to medium in size, deep green and blemish free on the outside. Simply wash the zucchini, slice in half, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Turn at least 4 times, making sure to cook the squash evenly and thoroughly.Brussel Sprouts with GarlicBrusselSproutsWash and remove the outer layers of the Brussel sprouts. Cut in half and toss in a large bowl with garlic, salt and pepper. You may wish to use a perforated flat grill pan or vegetable basket to keep the pieces from falling into the fire. I recommend tasting-testing as the best way to check doneness!Grilled AsparagusAsparagusAsparagus on the grill also works best with a flat grill pan. A water-soaked wooden skewer run through several of the spears works, too. Otherwise, you will have to make sure it lays across the grill perpendicular to the grill bars. Easy Asparagus is simply washed, cleaned and drizzled with melted butter. Add salt and pepper to taste and cook the spears to your heart's desire!Georgia Mountain Rentals cabins and chalets have either a gas grill or charcoal grill for the convenience of our guests. We would love to hear about your dinners and see pictures of your grilling experience in the Georgia Mountains!
